Just replaced rear brakes on my 96 Virago 1100 a while back. First have the wheel off the ground and put a block or something under the frame to secure it, don't trust just the center stand. Remove the wingnut and pull the brake rod out of the clevis lever. Then take out the cotter pin, remove the nut and pull the axle shaft bolt out. Pull the shaft final drive away from the wheel, and then work the wheel out from under the bike (you may have to deflate the tire). Then you'll have enough room to replace the brake shoes, which are mounted on the plate where the brake lever is.

Remove the wheel and slide the drum off. Twist the lever and pull off the shoes. In the words of the infamous manual, assembly is the reverse (get the springs on first). Simple job, don't breathe in the asbestos.
