I first got my 500 after I went through the motorcycle foundation beginners course a year ago to get down the basics on a manageable beginners bike but am now ready to upgrade to a permanent bike and I want more of a street oriented sport bike and have read the gsxr 750 is a good street oriented sport bike(yes, I want a sport bike for my daily riding, I like the feel of them, do not waste your time with cruiser suggestions, I am happy with the riding position of a sport bike). From what I read it has a steady/ controllable powerband, I wouldn't have to rev it high constantly to make it move like i do my 500(which now I feel is very underpowered now that I'm used to it), it's braking is smooth and powerful, and has great wind protection(I ride the highway a lot). I'm hoping that expierenced riders who have made the jump from small beginner bikes to bigger permanent ones can tell me their expierences and what they suggest I do. Thanks in advance for the suggestions. |

You have some experience. You are obviously serious about buying. I would go to a big multi-make dealer and take some for a ride. A 600 is a great choice. Any of the "big four " aren't going to disappoint you. They all have their own character though. You will have to figure that part out for yourself. I think a lot of people thing that a 600 won't be "enough " for them, and they look toward the GSX-R750 as a compromise between the 600 and the 1000. Don't get me wrong. The GSX-R750 is a great bike. I have ridden my friend's quite a few times, and it's always fun. It's just that even a 600 is overkill for the street. I'm not saying to avoid the 750, just don't get caught up in thinking that the 600 class isn't going to cut it. I'm currently on a GSX-R1000 and I'm moving back down to something smaller. |

I'm glad to see that you've decided that the jump to the 1000cc gixxer is a bad idea. I think the 750 would be *okay* as long as you're careful. Remember that the new 750 gixxers make around 130hp at 13,000rpm, so it's still making around twice the horsepower than that EX500 you've got. Poor throttle control out of a corner, especially with cold tires, and you'll lowside it before you know what happened. 2theadvocate.com/ news/ 24054839.html?showAll= y &c= y The link is a news story on the dangers of new riders and sportbikes. It specifically mentions the 750 gixxer in a fatal accident with an inexperienced rider and passenger. |

You are doing just what you should. A reasonable upgrade. Unless you are buying new have it checked out well and before you buy look at a GSX-F. |

I am a great fan of Yamaha. I feel that their products have something special to offer. The YZF R-6 is the bike I would like you to look at. It has all the goodies you can imagine. From a slipper clutch to 16 Titanium valves. It looks very focused and manageable too. Try one for size. |
