Firecracker nailed it on the head.....you will need a FACTORY service manual...stay away from Clymer and Haynes, they leave out alot of CRITICAL info that only HD puts in their books. The outer & inner primary, compensator assembly and clutch will have to be removed which requires an air compressor, 1/ 2 " impact gun, 1-1/ 2 " & 1-1/ 8 " impact sockets, will will need a 1/ 2 " drive torque wrench that goes up to 180 ft/ lbs and a tool to lock the primary in order to torque everything to spec upon reassembly and use RED LOCTITE....before using loctite...thorougly degrease all threads using brakleen and blow dry, Loctite will not cure if it comes in contact with oil....and keeping the compensator nut from coming loose is CRITICAL on 04-later bikes...this keeps the established side-to-side play on the crankshaft, if the nut comes loose while riding, it can be catastrophic to the engine. You'll need the manual for the torque procedures and specs and instructions on un-adjusting and re-adjusting the clutch & cable, etc. How do you know the stator is bad??? What tests were done? I just did a charging system job last week, all stator test were perfect, except for AC Voltage output, turns out the ROTOR was bad, not the stator, the magnets came loose and one of them got ground up and circulated through the primary, wiping out the clutch. Also, to back up "Just Me "...replace ALL seals on the primary whenever you remove it, it would be a shame if you developed a leak next month and the whole primary has to come off again. Also....ALWAYS disconnect the battery when doing any internal primary work.....that is if you like having 10 complete fingers!!!! |

You need a manual, not a diagram. You gotta pull the primary drive. |

Clearly you plan on doing your own work and that's awesome. So spend the money on a factory service manual instead of taking the word of people you don't know and follow the instructions to the letter and you'll get the job done. One thing I'll throw in, replace the seals ( jackshaft, mainshaft, and oring 11147b ) and get 4 new screws for the stator. You don't want to reuse the old ones and they are cheap. |
